  Though it was the English who gave the world organised football it was the French who bequeathed football its biggest tournament.
  Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) had been formed in Paris in 1904 and its president, Jules Rimet, formulated the idea of a tournament to determine the best international side in the world. In 1929 FIFA passed a vote to hold the first ever World Cup.

  Uruguay was the only country to volunteer to host the tournament. As a country celebrating its centenary of independence and current holders of the Olympic football title, she proved an excellent host.
  
  
  The 95,000 capacity Estadio Centenario was purpose-built in Montevideo and, though building work was not finished until five days after the tournament started, it was a carnival atmosphere that greeted the thirteen teams that had answered positively to the Uruguayan invitation.
  
  
  Only four European teams - France, Belgium, Yugoslavia and Romania - boarded ocean liners to go to South America. The Romanian team was the play-thing of King Carol, who assumed the selection duties for his team. But royalty held no sway in the virgin competition as the Romanians were eliminated in the first round.
  
  
  Aside from Yugoslavia, all the Europeans were knocked out in the first group stage and the semi-finals saw Uruguay line up against the Yugoslavs while Argentina met the United States.
  
  
  The Americans were a team made up of English and Scottish emigres and had easily brushed past Paraguay and Belgium in the groups, going further than any USA team has since. But there the romance was to end. The Argentinians, for whom centre-forward Guillermo Stàbile was in great form, thrashed them 6-1. The Yugoslavs were put to the sword by Uruguay by the same score.
  The hosts were living up to their billing as tournament favourites with winger José Andrade, reckoned by many to be the first great black player, tearing the defence apart.
  
  
  The final saw a battle of two long-standing rivals who face each other across the River Plate. And despite Stàbile notching up his eighth goal of the tournament and putting the Argentinians into a 2-1 lead, Uruguay scored three unanswered goals to make them winners of the inaugral Mondial.
  
  
  A 25-yard shot by Santos Iriarte put them into the lead and after Stàbile had hit the post, the clincher was scored in the last minute by Hector Castro, a centre-forward who had lost his left arm in a childhood accident.
  
  
  The partisan capacity crowd at the Estadio Centenario could now call their heroes world champions.

This was later cleared up as he claimed that he was only using the expression to show his intense affection for it.

7. $86,300,000. Francis Bacon – Triptych, 1976. Breaking the previous sale record of his work ($52.68 million), Bacon’s 3-piece masterpiece was sold to Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich, smashing the previous estimate of $70 million.

6. $87,900,000. Gustav Klimt – Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer II.The only model to be painted twice by Klimt and sold a few months after the first version, this portrait of Bloch-Bauer was part of a lot in 2006 of four Klimt paintings that went on to fetch a total of $192 million. Buyer unknown.

Auctioned in 2006, a mysterious Russian bidder took this home (along with a Monet and a Chagall, spending over $100 million) and no one has since found out who he was. The ownership of the painting has still not been made public.

Pablo Picasso – Garçon à la pipe. So far the highest price a painting has ever fetched at auction (as the others were all sold privately), and was the first painting to break the $100 million barrier (it was sold in 2004, whilst 1-3 were all in 2006). The strange thing is that it was never made public as to who expressed such an interest in Picasso’s portrait of a smoking Parisian.

Gustav Klimt – Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer I. This was sold by Maria Altmann, who – after a lengthy and complicated court battle – was deemed rightful owner of this Klimt and several others. Altmann was named as an inheritor of the painting in the will of by the widowed husband of the model herself, despite the efforts of the Austrian State, as Adele Bloch-Bauer had originally left the painting to the State Gallery in her own will. The painting was bought by Ronald Lauder for his Neue Galerie in New York, to be the centerpiece of a collection of Jewish-owned art rescued from the Nazi looting that took place in the Second World War.

2. $137,500,000. Willem de Kooning – Woman III. Another painting sold by Geffen in 2006, but this time bought by billionaire Steven A. Cohen. It is part of a series of 6 painted by de Kooning in the period of 1951-53, which revolved around the theme of a woman, and is allegedly the only Woman still in private hands.

Jackson Pollock – No.5, 1948. It is claimed by the New York Times that this painting was sold by David Geffen (of Geffen Records), to David Martinez (managing partner of Fintech Advisory). However, a press release issued on behalf of Martinez states that he didn’t actually purchase the painting. So the truth is shrouded in mystery, and it can only be rumored to have sold for a record-breaking $140 million.

Berbalik kepada perayaan April Fool's Day ini, adalah ia mula dirayakan sewaktu kejatuhan kerajaan Islam di Sepanyol. Setelah bertapak berkurun-kurun lamanya di Granada, Sepanyol, kerajaan Islam akhirnya runtuh diserang tentera-tentera Kristian.

Penduduk-penduduk Islam di Sepanyol (Moors) terpaksa berlindung di dalam rumah masing-masing untuk menyelamatkan diri. Tentera-tentera Kristian bagaimanapun tidak berpuas hati dan berusaha untuk menghapuskan orang-orang Islam dr Sepanyol.

Penduduk-penduduk muslim ini, diberitahu bahawa mereka boleh berlayar keluar dari Sepanyol dengan selamat bersama-sama barang-barang keperluan mereka dengan menggunakan kapal-kapal yang berlabuh dipelabuhan. Orang-orang Muslim yang risau sekiranya tawaran tersebut merupakan suatu penipuan, telah pergi keperlabuhan untuk melihat kapal-kapal yang dimaksudkan.

Setelah berpuas hati, mereka membuat persiapan untuk bertolak. Keesokan harinya (1 April), mereka mengambil semua barangan yang telah disiapkan menuju ke perlabuhan.

Pada masa inilah pihak Kristian mengambil kesempatan untuk menggeledah dan kemudian membakar rumah penduduk-penduduk Islam ini.

Mereka juga tidak sempat untuk menaiki kapal kerana semuanya dibakar. Pihak Kristian kemudiannya menyerang kaum muslim dan membunuh kesemuanya, lelaki, perempuan, serta anak-anak kecil. Peristiwa berdarah yang menyedihkan ini kemudiannya diraikan oleh tentera Kristian.

Keraian ini akhirnya dirayakan setiap tahun bukan sahaja di Sepanyol tetapi juga di serata dunia.

Yang menyedihkan, orang-orang Islam yang jahil mengenai peristiwa ini turut meraikan April Fool's Day tanpa menyedari mereka sebenarnya merayakan ulang tahun pembunuhan beramai-ramai saudara seIslam mereka sendiri.
